Welcome to the homepage of Fulbright Association
(Singapore)
The Fulbright Scholar
Program was established in 1946 under legislation introduced by
former Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas. Since its inception, more than
255,000 people -- 96,400 from the United States and 158,600 from other countries
-- have participated in the program, which is designed to increase mutual
understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other
countries. The Fulbright program awards approximately 4,500 grants annually.
“Our future is not in the stars but in our own minds and
hearts. Creative leadership and liberal education, which in fact go
together, are the first requirements for a hopeful future for mankind.
Fostering these - leadership, learning and empathy between cultures - was
and remains the purpose of the international scholarship program that I was
privileged to sponsor in the U.S. Senate.” William Fulbright
The Fulbright Association of Singapore, F.A. (S), has been involved in promoting
the objectives of the Fulbright program in various ways, notably the following:
-
selecting deserving and bright scholars for the Fulbright exchange
program to the U.S.
-
hosting Fulbrighters from the U.S. by means of the FAS-Friends Program
-
organising an Annual Dinner for Fulbright returnees and friends
of F.A. (S)
-
holding the F.A. (S) 'In-Town' talks series on topical subjects
-
broadening awareness of U.S-Asian film and culture in
its "Fulbright Fridays" series
Past guests-of-honour and speakers
for the Annual Dinner have included Ambassador Patricia Herbold, Mr Teo Chee
Hean (Deputy PM, Minister for Defence, and fellow Fulbrighter), and Professor
Kishore Mahbubani. In
conjunction with the 10th anniversary of F.A. (S), we also produced a book
"Beyond Barriers - my Fulbright experience" which highlighted 62 succinct but
very meaningful reflections by Fulbrighters on their experiences during the
Fulbright program. At this year's dinner, our guest-of-honour and speaker
was Ambassador Ong Keng Yong, Director of the Institute of Policy Studies, who
spoke on the timely topic of An Open World - The Best Way out of the Crisis.
As we continue to
provide an annual student exchange award for a successful candidate from each of
three local universities (NUS, NTU, and SMU), we warmly congratulate the
following on their
exchange awards:
-
