2. International Coast Clean-up with the Brown Club of Singapore

The Brown Club of Singapore is excited to invite DUAL members for the International Coastal Clean-up on September 11.

Did you know we have pink dolphins, sea turtles and dugongs in Singapore waters? But these rare animals are threatened by marine debris such as plastic bags and fishing nets. To raise awareness of ocean conservation, Brown University alumni and DUAL friends are participating in the International Coastal Clean-up on Sept 11 this year for the first time.

Since 1986, millions around the globe have joined in Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup, the world’s largest volunteer effort to clean up our marine environment. It's not just about picking up rubbish -- Ocean Conservancy will analyse the data we collect on Sept 11 to determine what activities are likely to be causing debris in the area. This information will aid policy makers in their decisions.

Enrolment is limited to 18 for us this first year. We will "adopt" a site along East Coast Parkway together with Hougang Secondary School's uniformed groups. We will meet at 9am on Sept 11 (Saturday) at the car park of the National Service Resort and Country Club. The event will finish at noon. Please bring along your own gloves, black trash bag, and umbrella/poncho. We will call off the cleanup if there is any lightning.

Family members and friends are welcome; this is a good activity for children aged 12 and above in your family.

5. ICAAS Annual Lecture, Dinner and AGM

Mr Lim Chuan Poh, A*STAR Chairman, will be speaking at the ICAAS Annual Lecture. He will be covering the state of R&D in Singapore and he will be elaborating on how Singapore as a small nation measures up to the bigger developed countries in this area. Mr Lim was recently conferred the Fellowship of Imperial College London – the highest award that Imperial bestows on individuals. Mr Lim has had an exceptionally distinguished career – first as the Chief of Defence Force at the Singapore Armed Forces, then as Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education. In his current role as Chairman of A*STAR, Mr Lim ensures that science and technology are at the heart of Singapore’s strategy for ongoing economic and social success.

Speed dating is a formalized matchmaking process whose purpose is to encourage people to meet a large number of new people. Guys and girls will rotate to meet each other for a series of short 4 minute "dates" to interact and get to know each other. At the end of the event each participant will fill out a form to be handed to the organizers stating any of the guys or girls whom you have interest in for a follow up date. We the organizers will compile the data and notify any matches.
